If you’re ever in need of some fitness motivation, you could do worse than look to the world of anime heroes. YouTuber Tyler Oliveira was feeling “fat, fed up, and tired of being a weakling,” and so he decided to commit his life to the way of the ninja for 30 days, working out like the title character of manga sensation Naruto.

Oliveira does this workout five days a week, allowing two days for rest and recovery. He eases into the challenge by running like a “normal person”, but it should be noted that a Naruto run involves leaning forward with your arms outstretched behind you… kind of a conspicuous sight.
After just five days, the Naruto workout has proven to be quite cardi0-intensive. “I find myself gasping for air and my dear life every time I do the workout,” says Oliveira, although he does add that the 3 mile run is a “piece of cake” compared to the 6-plus miles he was running towards the end of his recent One Punch Man challenge. “The shadowboxing has proven itself to be a very exhausting effort,” he adds. “Before you know it you’re drenched in a cold sweat and you’re feeling really tired.”
Perhaps the most unconventional element of the Naruto workout? Challenging somebody to a fight once a week. Seriously. (It turns out, though, that just walking into a gym and asking random dudes if they want to engage in physical combat doesn’t attract many volunteers.) Don’t do this.
Halfway through the month Oliveira is starting to notice some “petite” arm gains, more noticeable abs, and some extra size on his chest. “This has got to be one of the most refreshing workouts I’ve ever done in my life,” he says, adding that it’s a “palatable” option for a newbie.
Weighing in at 163.7 pounds at the start of the 30 days, Oliveira has put on more than 10 pounds at the end of the month. He admits that his diet was “variable” throughout the month-long challenge, saying: “I basically consumed whatever my heart told me to eat, so the flexibility of Naruto’s diet is without a doubt a plus.”
“I didn’t expect to get extremely ripped or yoked or anything from this workout,” he says, although at the end of the 30 days, he is proudly showing off the newly defined muscles in his arms and calves.
