Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, also known as mRNA-1273, and is a two-dose vaccine. The vaccine has authorization for use in a total of 45 countries. For those aged 18-29 who are eligible for a jab, the Moderna vaccine provides another alternative to the AstraZeneca vaccine. A commonly reported side effect from the Moderna vaccine includes Covid arm.
There has been reports of people experiencing a red, itchy, swollen, or painful rash at the injection site from the Moderna vaccine.
Known as Covid arm, the rash can appear several days after the vaccination.
A case report describes the experiences of four people who developed COVID arm seven to 10 days after receiving the first dose of the Moderna vaccine.
The authors of the report note that Covid arm is uncommon, not harmful, and recedes spontaneously or with the use of steroids or antihistamines.
Dermatologists and allergists are further studying the Covid arm side effect, which they’ve dubbed “delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity.”
The rash is red, sometimes itchy and painful to the touch, and can be as much five or six inches across.
Covid arm occurs on the arm where the shot was given.
“We do have more cases that are being reported in women, but that could be that women are more likely to tell you,” said Dr Kim Blumenthal, an allergist and epidemiologist and professor of medicine at Harvard medical school.
Covid arm appears to be most common in people in their 30s and 40s, however health experts state this could be due to the age of the health care workers getting the first wave of vaccinations.
Overall, women account for 77 percent of the Moderna vaccine’s reported side effects, with a median age of 43.
According to Medical News Today, other commonly reported Moderna vaccine side effects include:
- Fatigue (70 percent)
- Headache (64.7 percent)
- Muscle pain (61.5 percent)
- Joint pain (46.4 percent)
- Chills (45.4 percent)
- Nausea and vomiting (23 percent)
- Fever (15.5 percent)
Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported following administration of the Moderna COVID 19 Vaccine during mass vaccination outside of clinical trials, said the phase 3 clinical trial for Moderna.
The study trial added: “Solicited local and systemic adverse reactions reported following administration of Moderna COVID 19 Vaccine had a median duration of one to three days.
“Grade 3 solicited local adverse reactions were more frequently reported after Dose two than after Dose one.
“Solicited systemic adverse reactions were more frequently reported by vaccine recipients after Dose two than after Dose one.
“Throughout the same period, there were three reports of Bell’s palsy in the Moderna COVID 19 Vaccine group (one of which was a serious adverse event), which occurred 22, 28, and 32 days after vaccination, and one in the placebo group which occurred 17 days after vaccination.”
