Testosterone is the male sex hormone.
Alongside its many other benefits, it plays a vital role in the development and maintenance of masculine physical characteristics including muscle mass and strength, and growth of facial and body hair.
For November, some may be thinking of taking part in 'No Nut November', where people around the world abstain from masturbation for the whole month.
Many may not realise that masturbation can affect testosterone levels.

Symptoms of low testosterone
Signs warning you may have low testosterone include:
- Decreased or lack of sex drive
- Having trouble getting or keeping an erection, or erectile dysfunction (ED)
- Producing small amounts of semen during ejaculation
- Losing hair on your scalp, face, and body
- Lack of energy or exhaustion
- Loss of muscle mass
- Loss of bone mass
- Gaining higher amounts of body fat, including chest fat
- Experiencing unexplained changes in mood

Hypogonadism is a condition which means a man doesn’t produce enough of the hormone which helps in masculine growth and development otherwise known as testosterone.
This condition is either something a man is born with or they develop it later in life either from an injury or having an infection.
Hypogonadism causes a drop in a man’s libido, erectile dysfunction, loss of spontaneous erections or having a lowered sperm count which could cause infertility.
How masturbation affects testosterone levels
A previous study found that testosterone levels were slightly higher in men who abstained from sex for three weeks.
Another piece of research suggested that frequent masturbation before strength training workouts helped prolong the boost of testosterone levels. It also found that it helped increase muscle growth.
However, Cleveland Clinic explains that masturbation doesn't have long-term effects on testosterone levels.
It says: "Hypogonadism is not caused by frequent masturbation or sex — and masturbation doesn’t have any long-term effects on your testosterone level.
“There is no proven, scientific evidence of long-term negative effects on testosterone levels from masturbation or sexual activity.
“So, rest easy knowing it won’t harm your testosterone levels in any way.”
However, it is suggested that masturbation can have a short term effect on your testosterone, according to experts.
